1973-1974: The Original Powder Puff, Girls Volleyball Makes Varsity & 2 Hall of Famers

1973-1974

Athletics

The 1974 Cavalier yearbook describes Coach Don Crimin "as one of the best Cross Country coaches around" as the team wins another Golden League championship.

Girls Volleyball becomes a varsity sport for the first time as a result of a new C.I.F. ruling. The team is coached by Miss Thomas, who is also new to the valley. That would be Twyla Thomas (pictured: top photo, far left), 2014 Hall of Fame inductee and 30+ year member of the QHHS teaching staff. A future entry will highlight each of our Hall of Fame inductees and the public ceremony honoring our inaugural class of inductees will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014, 6:15 p.m. at Nicholson field, prior to the QHHS vs. HHS football game.

Wrestling continued to dominate the Golden League under Coach Gillins. They completed their season undefeated and five wrestlers: Tim Feickert, Jim Platts, Mike Miller, Ron Priestley and Don Crouse made it to the C.I.F. finals.

We learn that Boys' Tennis won their first-ever Golden League Crown during the previous season.

And Varsity football continued their quest to beat cross-town rival AVHS, but ended up unsuccessful in that attempt, although they ended the season with a 6-3 record.

Student Life

A long-standing tradition originated during the 1973 football season which lasted about 25 years until the AVUHSD was forced to ban the activity due to out of control behavior by participants in the late 90's. That activity was Powder Puff Football, in which the girls donned the football jerseys and the guys jumped into the cheerleader role! The first game was played at halftime of the last home football game of the year and the seniors won with an 8-0 victory over the juniors.

Homecoming Week is described in the yearbook as starting on "Tuesday, with rain so people went 'underground.' The 200 quad provided an arena for ballooning, as everyone seemingly lost 10 years of age. Wednesday began with "Be-Bop Day," and continued through wheel barrow races at lunch.  QHHS's 2nd annual 'Frizz Day' let students display their true colors. The traditional QHHS vs. Alumni football game brought back people and memories Thursday night. And capping a week of spirit was the Seniors vs. Underclassmen 'Tug O' War.' The Seniors, were of course...Undefeated!"

After traveling south to The Odyssey restaurant last year, the Junior Class had planned Prom at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, but the crunch of the energy crisis caused the price of transportation to become prohibitive. Instead, Prom remained in town at the new Ramada Inn in Lancaster.

The Yearbook lists FFA: Future Farmers of America as "the largest single
club on campus boasting a membership of over 140 members.

The list of 2014 Hall of Fame inductees includes Class of 1974 graduate Steve "Cosmic" Miller, being recognized for his achievement in Athletics. Unfortunately, Steve's senior photo was not included in the 1974 Cavalier, but here is his Junior year school photo!  The Hall of Fame public ceremony will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014, 6:15 p.m. at Nicholson Field prior to the QHHS vs. HHS football game.

The Editor-In-Chief of the 1974 Cavalier Yearbook was Carolyn Carter.

1972-1973: Sideburns, Mustaches, Traveling Prom, Ubiquity & a Hall of Famer!

1972-1973

Quartz Hill High School, year nine, welcomed the arrival of eleven new teachers to the staff, including three that would continue on to long and successful careers with QHHS and the AVUHSD.

Miss Susan Black joined the English department and she would eventually clock in over 30 years at QHHS.

Mr. Dan Brown was hired as a new PE teacher and over the years would rise in the ranks of administration in the AVUHSD, finally coming home to QHHS as a Vice Principal during his final year in education before retirement just a couple of years ago.  He was even gracious enough to return the following year to offer his support as a substitute V.P. briefly when the school had a need.

And Mr. Jay Clark came aboard as a Health and Science teacher in 1972. Mr. Clark also had a long career in the AVUHSD serving as an administrator for not only QHHS, but many schools in the district over the years.

Another notable entry in this year's yearbook was found in the senior section.  A young man by the name of Jeff Foster, Band president and member of the Class of 1973 might not have known as he finished off his high school career that he would eventually be returning to QHHS as its Principal and eventually becoming the Deputy Superintendent of the AVUHSD, a position he holds today. It is a shame, however, that he has since decided to say goodbye to those amazing 70's sideburns!

And speaking of 1970's style, we can't get away without showing these amazing photos of QHHS stalwarts, Mr. Molino and Mr. Stephens, who shared the duties of Junior Class Advisor during the 1972-1973 school year.  Rumor has it, part of the job description included maintaining a classic 70's 'stache!

We are also very fortunate to see a photo of Mr. DuPratt (also sporting a fabulous mustache), leading the Journalism class.  This year's book is the first we see the use of the name Ubiquity used as the name of the school newspaper, replacing the short-lived title Campus. The name Ubiquity is still used today.

Original and longtime Band director, Mr. Giesler is caught in this candid photo showing a true sign of the times holding a vinyl record while sitting next to reel-to-reel machines (sadly, no mustache, though).

An important entry in QHHS history is also documented on pages 136-137 of the yearbook. "For the first time the Junior class decided to hold their Prom out of the Antelope Valley. The setting was the beautiful Apollo Room at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills, overlooking the San Fernando Valley."  So began an annual tradition of loading up buses and traveling down south and other directions to reach the annual Prom destination. This year's Prom Queen was Ranae Sanders.

And this year's Homecoming Queen was Viki Lamela. Here she is surrounded by her court of princesses.

Also, from the Class of 1973 is inaugural Hall of Fame inductee Rita Champ Kokkoris.  From Rita's senior yearbook, are her senior photo, Homecoming princess photo and she is pictured with her fellow Senior Class Senators. Rita is being recognized for her achievement in Business and will be inducted during the public Hall of Fame ceremony on Friday night, October 10, 2014, 6:15 p.m. at Nicholson Field prior to the QHHS vs HHS football game.

New clubs mentioned in this year's book include Los Unidos, which acted as a service and social club for all Spanish-speaking students, and Ski Club, which took an exciting three-day ski trip to Dodge Ridge.

In sports, Cross Country made yet another entry into CIF, Basketball beat cross-town rival AVHS for the first time on February 2, 1973, Wrestling grasped their third consecutive Golden League title with Mr. Gillins as their first-year coach and Football lost to AVHS yet again (see Score Box).

Finally, we wrap-up with the traditional message from the Principal. Principal Fuller has just wrapped-up his fifth year as the head of QHHS.

1971-1972: THREE Hall of Fame recipients, Snow & Ms. Leslie! (updated)

1971-1972

This year's yearbook (editor-in-chief Lori Moser) included a fun panoramic picture in front of each of the main sections highlighting the diversity of activities, athletics, faculty and students.

ATHLETICS
Noteworthy accomplishments mentioned for our Rebel sports teams this year include:

Cross Country
2nd consecutive Golden League Champion title.
CIF 2nd place finish

Basketball
2nd place in Golden League
First time CIF appearance

Wrestling
Shared Golden League Championship with two other schools. Ended season 17-1 and 44-4 over the past three seasons. They appeared at CIF for the past three years; sent three wrestlers to CIF finals this year. They placed first in Golden League Tournament and qualified nine for CIF. Four took first place and five placed second in the tournament.

Track
Last season, the track team won their first Golden League title with a record of 7-0.

Football
This season was described as a "rebuilding year" ending up 4th place in Golden League.

HALL OF FAME
Three 2014 Hall of Fame inductees make significant appearances in this year's book: students Tom Facey, John "Sherman" Butler & staff member Mrs. Joy Morgan.

During Tom Facey's senior year, he was awarded the Golden League Defensive Player of the Year for football and served as the Senior Class President, among a long list of activities he was involved with throughout his years at QHHS. Tom is being recognized for his success in politics as a member of the QHHS Hall of Fame.

John "Sherman" Butler was the Senate President, Key Club member and one of the top Varsity basketball players in the forward position during his senior year. John is being recognized as part of the Hall of Fame for his contributions to Community Service.

Mrs. Joy Morgan joined the QHHS staff as a member of the special education department. Over the years, Joy, along with her husband Jay, would prove to be the Ultimate Rebel Fans attending more sporting events than anyone else. In the big gym, you can find signs in their honor hanging near the scoreboard. And today, you will still see Joy attending nearly every game played at QHHS.

The 2014 public Hall of Fame ceremony will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014, 6:15 p.m. at Nicholson Field prior to the QHHS vs. HHS Football game.

1970-1971: The IMC opens!

Cavalier 71 Cover
1970-1971

Now in its seventh year of existence, Quartz Hill High School continues to grow. The student population from the previous year increased from 1,600 to 1,850 (still a far cry from today's 3,200 students).

The big news on campus was the opening of the IMC, or Instructional Material Center, which housed the new library, nurse's office, activities office, photography lab, and the audio visual department. Today, the IMC is more commonly referred to as the Admin Building, which houses the guidance, attendance, records, accounting, nurse's and administration offices, library and switchboard.

IMC opens during 2nd semester.

SPORTS

The football team ended their season with a 5-3-1 record. New milestones were achieved, including the first fieldgoal ever kicked by a Rebel place kicker (Jim Seabrook), most shutouts by a Rebel football team (Fillmore, Apple Valley and Victor Valley), and it was the first year that the Rebels beat the Palmdale Falcons at the varsity level.

The Cross Country team was excited to beat cross-town rival Antelope Valley for the first time. They set the fastest time in the league for the two mile (Pat Curran 9:52) and the team was named Golden League Champions.

STUDENT LIFE
An assortment of new clubs appear in this year's yearbook, including Geography, Foreign Studies, Free Style Wrestling, Racket, Future Teachers, Spirit Squad, Science & Rocket and Electronics.
